It was bad news for Paula again last week when she found another two of her groups at the bottom. The Stereo Hoggz were on the chopping block again, as well as the country/rock hybrid that is Lakoda Rayne. The Stereo Hoggz were kicked to the curb and Lakoda Rayne must have thanked their lucky…

Introducing our new game called:

“Don’t Be A Di*k During Meals With Friends.”

The first person to crack and look at their phone picks up the check.

Our (initial) purpose of the game was to get everyone off the phones free from twitter/fb/texting and to encourage conversations.

Rules:

1) The game starts after everyone has ordered.

2) Everybody places their phone on the table face down.

3) The first person to flip over their phone loses the game.

4) Loser of the game pays for the bill.

5) If the bill comes before anyone has flipped over their phone everybody is declared a winner and pays for their own meal.

Variations/house rules:

-Starting the game after everyone is seated.

-In the rare event that multiple people flip their phones simultaneously, the bill is split between said players.

- Feel free to invoke penalties/strikes systems.

Notes:

- No touching or messing with anybody else’s phones.

- You don’t have to stack the phones. This was done for picture taking purposes.

- I realize I should perhaps think of a different name for this awesome game. Because I don’t mean to imply that everyone who checks their phone during meals is a di*k.

- I recommend not being such a stickler or hardass on people about the rules and even initiation of the game. Basic premise is to just get people open to the idea of staying active and attentive to one another. But if someone has to take a call; they have to take a call =).

- Have fun! It’s really more of a fun concept in this new age high tech life of ours. Conversation is the spice of life.

As I work towards completing my own game, I’ve been thinking a lot about finishing projects in general. I’ve noticed that there are a lot of really talented developers out there that have trouble finishing games. Truthfully, I’ve left a long trail of unfinished games in my wake… I think everyone has. Not every project is going to pan out, for whatever reason. But if you find yourself consistently backing out of game projects that have a lot of potential, it could be worth taking a step back and examining why this happens.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA? ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Negotiating Parties -

Australia

Canada

European Union

Japan

Mexico

Morocco

New Zealand

The Republic of Korea

Singapore

Switzerland

United States

Essential ACTA Resources -

HOW TO ACT AGAINST ACTA: Make a difference

Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet

Make no bones about it, our beloved internet is in serious danger…

and here is why.

Last year legislative measures were introduced in the United States Senate and United States House of Representatives, S. 968 (the “PROTECT IP Act”) and H.R. 3261 (the “Stop Online Piracy Act”). Their primary purpose, as we see it, is to help Hollywood keep rolling in the profits. Passage of these bills would mean that so-called “rogue” websites could be censored when they infringe on copyright law.

BUT…the language in both of these bills is written with a very broad paintbrush. Their passage would have a huge impact on the work of human rights advocates who speak out against injustice on sites that could easily be labelled “rogue” websites. It’s a slippery slope when censorship reigns.

The indymedia network that thrives on open publishing (and our favorite www.indybay.org here in the San Francisco Bay Area) would be subject to censorship, defeating the very purpose of its existence. Similar platforms created to provide anonymity to whistleblowers could become major casualties of these bills.

All to save Hollywood’s bottom line?

It’s not often that Raging Grannies align with the likes of Facebook and Google. We’ve protested at Facebook about their lack of privacy considerations, and at Google because of their flip-flop on internet neutrality. (After we demonstrated last time at Google we wound up on Jon Stewart’s ‘The Daily Show’ and in a New York Times photo). But this time we are on the same side with the two internet giants. They too have come out AGAINST these Hollywood generated bills.

We are keeping track of who supports PIPA in the Senate and SOPA in the house through this useful site. And we are taking action.

Our Senator Dianne Feinstein has disappointed us before by not standing up for Social Security…she disappoints us again by being a co-sponsor of PIPA. We are sent her an open letter with the photo above.

And we applaud our local Silicon Valley Congresswomen Zoe Lofgren and Anna Eshoo who say NO to SOPA.

US Senators from California Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein are listed as PIPA co-sponsors. You can contact Senator Boxer at (202) 224-3553 and Senator Feinstein at (202) 224-3841. In other states, reach out to your own US senator.

Tell them the PIPA is dangerous…it could be used as a tool for online censorship. Tell them what websites YOU use that could become toast, and why you think it is important that we have a free internet.

Please tell your Congressperson to vote NO on SOPA.

Our friends at the Electric Frontier Foundation and Save the Internet help us stay up to date on what can be done to keep the internet free of censorship. We proudly stand together with them for internet freedom.

I am an artist. I am 57 years old. I am broke and in debt. (insert fucked-up story here, replete with unemployment and inability to pay for medical care) I am not a joiner and have never been much interested in politics (perhaps because I have sensed it was all a sham and have given in to cynicism) yet seeing this movement has excited me. It is the first genuine thing in politics that I have seen in 40 years!

I would like to address the “1%”: Greed is NOT good. Ambition is good- and there will always be inequality- viva la differance. Greed=Fear. Greed is the irrational hoarding of wealth in the face of fear. The reason you are afraid is that we are seeing a shift in the economic paradigm- such as has happened throughout history. We are also facing environmental catastrophe on a scale never seen before. The tectonic plates of economy are shifting from the old oil/consumerist/imperialist model of capitalism towards something else. It’s not that we don’t need energy and goods- but we’ve got to get smarter, better and more equitable than ever before. We are moving towards an increasingly intellectual, autonomous and creative phase. You will kill yourselves trying to preserve that which must die. The smarter of you will indeed profit from change, and I, for one, would not deny that to you- but the only way to preserve that which must be preserved (i.e., the planet (Earth, remember?)) is for us all to profit, sustainably. We have so much potential- more amazingly creative human resource than ever, but we must all grow together as a species. We must abandon irrational modes of governance and planning that is based upon fear! This whole question of “socialism vs. capitalism” is bullshit!! Things like medical care and internet (like education, roads, postal) could/should be moved into the realm of “infrastructure” to fuel a new, diverse, locally rooted yet global economy that can increase “profits” on a scale never seen previously. for all. The govt. is currently subsidizing outmoded and harmful industries but the movement of life on this planet is shifting- GWTP! (get with the program)

I am not lazy. I am impatient to work. I am not depressed. The economy is, dummy! I am excited. I am hopeful. I must try to do what I can, however seemingly insignificant.

                                         the 99%. -eyesection

You have an inherent need to solve problems, visually and conceptually. There is enormous value in this, but you may be misplacing your talents.

The internet, at this time in history, is the greatest client assignment of all time. The Western world is porting itself over to the web in mind and…
